Volunteering

At MHJA you have great opportunities to be a part of the success at shows and events throughout the year.  Volunteers are what help our organization run smoothly.  We have annual events that need your support.

Some of these responsibilities include:

  • Warm-up Ring Monitor: Manages the flow of the warm up ring by ensuring the safety of riders allowing only 6 per time slot as well as keeping the ring running on time as per the orders of go on Showgroundslive.

  • Shavings Monitor: Manages the distribution of pre-ordered shavings. The monitor is supplied with a list of each entry's shavings order and ensures that the distribution is orderly and correct.

  • Ring Announcer: Announces each rider entering the ring to the spectators and competitors using a supplied microphone. The ring announcer also reads scripts for our current MHJA sponsors. Sponsorship scripts are provided to the volunteer by the show secretary. Learn more in the Announcer Checklist.

  • Jump Crew - *Schooling Show only position*: Replaces fallen poles, standards, etc. as needed after a rider has completed their course. Assists the course designer in changing fence heights, course configurations, etc.

  • Whipper-in: Assists the gate manager with various tasks as needed including ensuring the proper riders are ready to line up in the gate after warming up as per the orders of go on Showgroundslive. Radios the judge with the entry number and which course the rider is completing. There are times that the Gate Manager manages the flow of riders from the warm up ring, Whipper-in would then pre-load entries as per Gate Managers' discretion. Learn more in the Whipper-in Checklist.

  • Awards/Ribbons/Photos: Organizes and distributes the prizes for each class after the judge has finalized their decision. Takes photos of each winner in front of the appropriate sponsor's jump and ensures that it is sent to our social media chair. Learn more in the Awards/Ribbons/Photos Checklist.

  • Timer - *Schooling Show only position*: Times the jumper entries using a provided timing device, relays that information to the judge.

  • Parking Attendant (Birds Hill Park Only): Directs vehicles to either the visitor parking lot, trailer parking, or barn parking lot. Only vehicles with MHJA provided parking passes may park in the barn area. Vehicles can enter the barn parking lot area briefly  for drop off/pick up only.

  • Evening Jump Reset *** Must be able to lift 50lbs: Assists the course builder in preparing the course in each ring the night before for the following day of showing. Physical fitness is important as everything is set up manually.

  • Night Security: Camps onsite for the duration of the show, ensuring the safety of the animals and property.

.....and more!
